REGIONAL GUARDIAN ANGELS GATHER FOR NYC SUBWAY PATROL
Founder Curtis Sliwa Leads Patrol from Fordham Road

by Bruce "Phoenix" Burleson, Staff Writer
NEW YORK --
About 30 Guardian Angels gathered in New York City on October 8-9 for a 24-hour subway patrol.
The patrol was organized to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the first patrol beginning at the Fordham Road subway stop in 1979.  At that time Curtis Sliwa was a night manager at a local McDonalds and the first patrol consisted of 13 of his coworkers.  The patrol was originally named the "Magnificent 13" before being renamed the Guardian Angels.
The patrol lasted for 24 hours, covered large segments of the New York subway system and involved Guardian Angels from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.  It began with a patrol of several streets in the Bronx surrounding the Fordham Road subway stop.
One elderly woman stopped Sliwa and mentioned to him how she'd lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and remembered the early days of the Guardian Angels.
Additional New York patrols involving Angels from around the region are being planned to patrol several New York neighborhoods.

by Bruce "Phoenix" Burleson, Staff Writer
BROCKTON -- Plans continue to be drawn up to launch new Guardian Angel patrols in communities across Massachusetts, beginning with rebuilding the recently defunct Boston sub-chapter.
Patrols in Boston are being planned for upcoming weeks in October and November.  The Massachusetts chapter also plans outreach efforts at colleges and universities in several cities.
These new patrols are open to anyone who wishes to participate.  If you'd like to take part in them, or if you are a student who would like a speaker from the Guardian Angels to visit their campus, email Chapter Leader Jim "Ajax" Cardella.

NEW MOBILE PATROL UNIT LAUNCHES
by Bruce "Phoenix" Burleson, Staff Writer
BROCKTON -- The Massachusetts Guardian Angels have launched a new Mobile Patrol Unit (MPU) consisting of car marked with the Angels logo on both doors.  The vehicle is equipped with a police scanner, two-way radios, an amber flashing emergency light, fire extinguisher and state-of-the-art first aid kit.
The MPU will be used in tandem with foot patrols to scout out areas and increase safety for patrolling.  It will also be used during emergency situations such as inclement weather--for example looking out for homeless people when it snows or during heavy rain or wind.
The MPU also will from time to time work together with Brockton Police and Fire to increase emergency-response capabilities.
